Better information, better climate for better future
2009-09-01

The Third World Climate Change Conference (WCC-3) is held in Geneva, Switzerland, between August 31 and September 4, 2009. The main goal of the Conference is to establish the international framework of cooperation to minimize the risk related to current and future state of climate through taking into account the predictions regarding climate change into decision making process.
Poland is represented by: Mr. Maciej Nowicki, The Minister of the Environment, (as the COP 14 President), prof. Mirosław Miętus, the expert from the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management and prof. Maciej Sadowski, the expert from the Institute of Environment Protection.
Organizers are convinced that it is very important that politicians include the results of the scientific researches into decision making. Decision making based on the accurate and actual climate information provided by meteorologists and climatologists is extremely important because it helps to minimize the threats and to issue the early warnings that inform the society about floods, droughts, cold and heat waves. It is very important because it enables people to prepare and protect themselves against the consequences of such climate extremes.
During WCC-3, the tools are going to be elaborated that are helpful in minimizing the consequences of natural disasters, maximizing the food safety and in the management of other risks concerning climate change.
The conference is going to gather the scientists, politicians, business leaders, decision-makers from the public and private sector and people providing services regarding climate issues.
WCC-3 will enable climatologists and experts from the most important spheres of the economy to start the discussion with decision-makers and politicians from around the world.
In the framework of the conference, four parallel sessions will be organized:
The conference is organized by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) together with other UN agendas, governmental and nongovernmental organizations and public and private sector.
During the conference, the results of assessments prepared by WMO, UNEP and IPCC will be presented together to UNFCCC parties in relation to adaptation. Results of WCC-3 conference are expected to contribute to the 15th session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP15, which will be held in December 2009 in Copenhagen).
The First World Climate Conference was organized by WMO in 1979 and resulted in the establishment of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The Second World Climate Conference resulted in the establishment of a UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It also led to the establishment of the Global Climate Observing System.
